Chris de Mauny, Partner, Bird & Bird

Chris de Mauny is a patent litigation specialist based in San Francisco. He advises clients from a range of industries including tech, life sciences and sustainable technologies. He is licensed to practice law in England & Wales and registered as a Foreign Legal Consultant with the State Bar of California.

Chris advises on all forms of intellectual property litigation, principally patent litigation. In 2018 he was identified as a ‘rising star’ for patent litigation by Managing Intellectual Property and again in 2019. In 2019 he was referred to as a ‘key lawyer’ within Bird & Bird’s London patent litigation team by Legal 500. In 2020, he was recognized as a ‘Rising Star’ for patents by Expert Guides, a peer-nominated international guide to lawyers, Legal 500 and MIP. Since becoming a partner in 2021, Chris has been ranked or recommended by IAM, MIP and Legal 500.

In April 2024, Chris relocated to San Francisco to co-head Bird & Bird’s office which brings our European and Asia-Pac expertise to US soil. Bird & Bird does not – and Chris does not – provide legal advice on Californian or any other US law.

Chris has represented a range of clients from multinational corporations to individual traders in disputes involving patents, trademarks and passing off, design rights, copyright, and rights in confidential and/or private information. His recent work has focused primarily on patent litigation in the life sciences, electronics and sustainable technologies.

Chris is a member of EPLAW, the UK’s IP Bar Association, Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and AIPPI.

 

Morag Macdonald, Partner, Bird & Bird

Morag Macdonald is regularly named as a leader in the IP litigation field. Her particular interests are all forms of IP dispute and strategic advice, especially as regards cross border patent litigation.

Morag has been involved in litigation before the UPC since it started in June 2023 and is a UPC representative.  In particular she has been involved with various cases on behalf of Dexcom against Abbott including the first witness hearing in the UPC which occurred in the Nordic regional division at the end of 2024.

Morag joined Bird & Bird’s Intellectual Property Group in 1985 having originally trained as a barrister and became a partner of the firm in 1989.  Her original degree, from Cambridge University, was in Mathematics, Physics and Law.
