Welcome to the San Francisco Intellectual Property Law Association website (the “Site”). This policy discloses how SFIPLA collects certain personal information and may share that information with others. This policy may change at any time; any changes will be posted on this page. By using the Site and accessing the content contained within it, you signify that you understand and agree to the then-current version of this policy.
Information we collect
SFIPLA may automatically collect certain information when you visit the Site, which may include your browser information, previous webpages visited and your IP address.
SFIPLA may monitor traffic patterns and Site usage in order to further develop the features and functionality of the Site and to enhance your online experience.
The Site may also use “cookies” for purposes such as storing members’ passwords and preferences. Cookies are small pieces of information that are stored by your browser on your computer’s hard drive. If you edit your Internet browser to block cookies, you may be required to reenter certain information when you visit the Site and certain features of the Site may be unavailable to you.
SFIPLA does not require that anyone register in order to visit the Site. However, if you choose to use certain features of the Site (e.g., event registration, member registration, or mailing list signups) we may request that you register and provide certain personal information, such as your first and last name, mailing address, email address and the like. SFIPLA may also collect certain demographic data such as your zip code and gender.
If you communicate with SFIPLA by email, post messages, or otherwise complete online forms or surveys, SFIPLA may collect information you provide in doing so. Whenever you voluntarily disclose personal information online (such as to other participants in a chat group), that information can be collected and used by others. You provide such information at your own risk.
SFIPLA also collects personal information from the data that members have provided upon registration as a member.
How we use information
In general, SFIPLA uses the personal information that you provide for the specific purpose for which the information was collected. For example, SFIPLA uses email addresses gathered through the Site or other sources to communicate with its members about SFIPLA, services SFIPLA provides to its members and other types of information that SFIPLA believes will be of interest to you. If you do not wish to receive such communications, you may opt out by clicking the link provided at the bottom of SFIPLA emails.
Who we share information with
SFIPLA may disclose traffic data to its service providers and may share demographic data with advertisers and other third parties.
SFIPLA has provided, and may continue to provide, members with access to a member directory that includes personal information about SFIPLA’s members.
SFIPLA may share or disclose your information when it has your permission to do so or when SFIPLA has a good faith belief that such disclosure is mandated by law, including without limitation, disclosure to law enforcement or other government officials in connection with an investigation of fraud, intellectual property infringements, or other activity that is illegal or may expose SFIPLA or you to liability.
Entities into which SFIPLA is merged, or to which its assets, the Site or operations have been transferred, will have access to and be able to use your personal information under the terms of this policy. Also, certain courts, such as U.S. Bankruptcy Courts, may have the authority under certain circumstances to permit your personal information to be shared or transferred to third parties without your permission.
